Research methodology course
Eight weeks from research question to approved protocol, with a mentor and a cohort of fellow health professionals.
The research methodology course takes a health professional with a question to an approved protocol in eight weeks. It is the entry point to Sintieh Research Academy: most of our fellows, and many of our mentors, started here. The course is practical, and the final assignment is a protocol you can submit to an ethics committee.
Who the research methodology course is for
- Doctors, nurses, pharmacists and laboratory scientists new to research.
- Students preparing a thesis proposal.
- Public health and NGO staff who need to design evaluations.
What the research methodology course includes
- Eight weekly live sessions, recorded for revision.
- Framing a question, literature search and critical appraisal.
- Study designs, sampling and sample size.
- Data collection tools, data management and ethics.
- Protocol writing with written feedback, and a certificate on completion.
Duration and format
Eight weeks, one evening session a week, online, with two in-person days in Buea for those who can attend. Cohorts start three times a year; dates appear in the information bar. Graduates can continue into the data analysis short course or into research mentorship to complete the study.

Our standards
Every piece of work follows a written protocol and, where people are involved, ethical approval before data collection. We report to the partner as well as to a journal, and we follow ICMJE authorship rules. As a result, partners can rely on what Sintieh Research Academy delivers, and readers can check every claim against its source. In addition, all of our research methodology course work is delivered by staff and fellows who have themselves published.
