Projects

Three programmes, one method

Each project starts with a question from a hospital, a district or a partner, and ends with a result they can use.

Health research impact: what the work changed

  • Community health

    Hypertension awareness

The 2023 project reached more than 5,000 people with blood pressure screening and education.

  • Healthcare quality

    Clinical audits

Hospital teams were supported to publish clinical audits that improved care standards.

  • Evidence-based policy

    Policy influence

How impact is measured

How health research impact is measured

We report three things for every project: the people reached, the decisions the evidence informed, and the outputs that outlast the project. For the hypertension programme that meant the number screened and referred, the district health plan that adopted the screening protocol, and the trained volunteers who ran the following year's campaign without us.

Clinical audits are judged by whether the ward changed practice and whether the audit was published, so that other hospitals can repeat it. Policy work is judged by citation: whether a district strategy, an NGO programme or a ministry guideline used the finding.

All health research impact figures on this page come from project reports held by SRA and its partners, and the methods follow World Health Organization guidance on screening and audit. Where a figure is an estimate we say so. Partners can request the underlying report through the contact page.

Working with us on a project

What partners ask before they start

Who owns the data?
The partner. SRA holds data only for the duration of the project under a written agreement, and returns or destroys it at the end as the agreement states. Publication uses anonymised data with the partner named as a co-author or acknowledged, as agreed at the start.
Which countries do you cover?
Cameroon from Buea, and Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya and Uganda through partner organisations that provide field teams. Analysis and writing are delivered remotely to any country.
Can a project include training for our staff?
Yes, and most do. A clinical audit project, for example, trains the ward team to run the audit cycle themselves, so that the second cycle happens without us.
Success stories

Fellows on what the training changed

Three research fellows, in their own words. Testimonials are published with consent.

  • Humility, honesty, discipline and productivity being the core values which SRA so much upholds was one of the motivations that kept me going even when it seemed so tough. Indeed it has been an awesome, mind-blowing, fascinating, impacting and a very rewarding experience
    Ngala BlessingResearch fellow
  • What more can I say? SRA is a place to be, where your growth is their priority. They also aim at building a sustainable scientific community and a body of scientific researchers that cannot only think out of the box to do the new but take the necessary actions to change the world with just an idea. Without actions, the world would still be an idea.
    Amin LenoreResearch fellow
  • At SRA hidden skills of critical and analytical thinking were triggered within me. As the course progressed I could do a better appraisal of the various components and steps of the different research topics presented on ideation days.
